While Energy Modeling helps us to understand and reduce the operational carbon impact of our buildings, some materials and construction techniques used to construct those high-performance buildings will have higher embodied carbon than others. Carbon Accounting considers all factors from mining raw materials, transportation, and manufacturing (known as ‘cradle to gate’) to the impacts of the construction process, operational use stage, and end of life stage (known as ‘cradle to grave’). Tools such as Tally and EC3 give us a better understanding of the actual environmental impacts of the materials we use for our buildings.
